Year 9 How to Revise
WHAT IS REVISION?
Revision is where you go over material that you have covered in lessons and practice the questions that have come up before so that they stick in your memory. If you don't revise the things you have learned, then we begin to forget to them. This means that when it comes to exams you might struggle to remember the information you need to answer a question correctly. However, if you have revised a subject in the weeks before you have an exam we remember more of the things that you have learned and will need for the test. It will also help you to feel more confident going into the exam.
HOW LONG SHOULD I REVISE FOR?
At this stage you should be doing, on average, 2-3 x 15 minute sessions every evening. This should be spread across your subjects but with a more session based on English, Maths and Science because of the amount of content that you learn in them . One session may be creating flashcards using the pages of a revision book, or 15 minutes running through a set of flash cards already created.
Writing a timetable to follow will help to keep you on track and motivated, and might look like this:

How do i revise?
To start with, this website has some great tips around revision techniques: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zgc3w6f
One excellent way of revising is through creating flashcards that you or your family and friends then use to test you on. You can buy a set of 800 blank flash cards off of Amazon for less than £10.
You use these by writing revision notes on 1 side of the card and a prompt on the other i.e.
Only found in plant cells?
[Front of card] |
Vacuole Cell wall Chloroplasts
[Back of card] |
Once you have created these, you then test yourself by trying to remember everything on the back. You will cycle through these cards all the way up to their exams, as this well help you to memorise key content.
If you want to maximise the effectiveness of flash card, there is a system that you can employ detailed below. This a great activity to do with your family after mealtimes or breakfast, so that they can help you with your revision. You could even make a game of it, and negotiate rewards on how many you get right or how many sessions you complete!
