Aim Higher Winners

On 3rd April, Spires Academy won first prize in the Aimhigher Kent and Medway art competition. The night was attended by students, parents and teachers from many schools in Kent and Medway. Judges included local business, higher education facilities, art gallery curators, artists and Aimhigher dignitaries. Winners were taken from every key stage and competition was so strong that a new category was added, the Commendation Award.

Laurie Taylor, from Aimhigher, opened the night with a speech praising the participants, their encouraging parents and the professionalism shown by the entrants.

The Sidney Cooper Gallery, which hosted the competition, was created by the Canterbury Christchurch University and displays national and local artists, and many famous names have displayed their artwork, statues and earthenware at the Gallery. It made a fitting venue for the Spires Academy winning team to be given their £200.00 prize money which goes towards the Art department. Art teacher Mike Foreman, who has worked extremely hard coaching and encouraging the students, collected the prize and was beaming broadly as he accepted the prize!

Special mention must go to Henry Irving who won the Commendation Prize for key stage 3. He won a special workshop day provided by the University for Creative Arts, which will include hints and tips on animation, fashion, life studies and print making. Henry was delighted, as his family were there to see him collect his prize. Well done Harry!

Thanks to everyone that attended and supported their children in a venture that was enjoyed by everyone.
