Inspire to Aim Higher
The first half of this Spring term saw our budding artists and photographers hard at work on an art competition, which required students to create new, exciting and unusual ideas to promote and describe the work of the Aimhigher programme.
Aimhigher is a national programme run by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The programme aims to widen participation in higher education by raising the awareness, aspirations and attainment of young people from all backgrounds. Aimhigher also offers information, advice and guidance to students, their teachers and their families.
To inspire our students, we first held a series of workshops to help them gain an understanding of what the Aimhigher organisation is and does, and to explain the principles and objectives for competition. It was not long before the students imaginative ideas were flowing and some great pieces of work started to emerge. The creativity that young people draw on is something that always takes us by surprise and it was fantastic to see the students getting involved with an initiative that wasn’t just Academy based, but reached to connect beyond the Academy gates.
There are some great prizes to be won including digital cameras and colour printers – which have proved no little incentive to the students. The competition closed on 29th February and winners will be announced soon after. So watch this space!
All the students’ work will be in an exhibition at the Sidney Cooper Gallery in Canterbury City Centre later in the year.
