Spires Academy Golf Team vs Kings at Royal Cinque Port Golf Club

Posted on: 08/09/2017

The Golf academy played a grudge match against Kings School on Thursday 8th September at Royal Cinque Ports. During a blustery afternoon some future stars were found. Notable examples were Euan Evans we was confirmed to have ‘done the best bunker shot in the world’ as proclaimed by his opponent on the 14th hole when his approach shot finished within 3 feet of the flag, Joe Blackwell performed an equally amazing from on the 16th hole when a perfect drive finished 160 yards from the hole, his next approach shot cleared 160 yards, into wind, the finish 2 feet from the hole. Owen Fagg who was the star of the afternoon won the game after 10 holes, beating a 6 handicapper.

All the boys were exceptional role models, displaying high levels of professionalism and a strong golfing performance. Well done to:

Owen Fagg (9 Handicapper) – won his game

Harry Harry – (16 handicapper) – drew his game

Euan Evans (16 handicapper) – lost his game on the 16th hole

Joe Blackwell (28 handicapper) – won his game on the 16th hole

Ben Collins – (15 handicapper) who lost his game on the 17th hole.

The game finished 2 ½; to 2 ½. A very closely fought battle on one of the hardest and best links courses in the country (29th best links golf course in UK and Ireland according to Golf Monthly; 15th Best links golf course in England by Top 100 Golfer Courses). Former presidents included Prince of Wales and Field Marshal Viscount Allenby, GCB, GCMG, GCVO. This course hosts the final stages of the UK Open Championship and is generally regarded as a ‘brute’ of a links course due to its difficulty. The return fixture will be held at Canterbury Golf Club on 20th October.

Well done to all involved.
