Spires Visit to ISG WhitstablePosted on: 12/07/2019
Twelve year 9 BTEC Engineering students visited ISG Plc at Boleyn House, Whitstable on the 11th July. The visit was to offer an insight into the design and manufacturing processes in an industrial woodworking setting.
After officially signing in, the students started their visit with a talk from the Health & Safety Manager for the company who issued all staff and students with a hi-viz vest, a pair of ear plugs and a set of safety glasses. It was then off to the design department were the students saw how the bird box was drawn in 3D and then converted into a CAD (Computer Aided Design) manufacturing drawing. This program file was then transferred to the CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machine which machined the outline and holes of the bird box.
Students were then shown the spray area used to spray the panels and then each student was kindly presented with a flat-packed bird box.
The students really enjoyed the experience and asked appropriate questions. A big "thank you" was given by the students to the ISG organisers of the visit.
We will be organising further visits for year 7 and 8 students who are interested in working in the wood industry. Look out for the posters in September.
