Year 9 student, Sophie Chapman, represented Kent in the English Schools’ Football Association PlayStation under 14 Inter County Cup for girls against Lancashire. The match took place on Thursday 11th May at St Andrews (Birmingham City’s Ground). The match was live streamed on the ESFA YouTube Channel, and was watched by staff and students. Sophie tells her story
"After the build-up during the week, the nerves kicked in the night beforehand, lasting all the way up on the coach to Birmingham with my team mates until the moment we kicked off. The match started slowly as I assume that a lot of the players were nervous. There were a few chances in the first half, but they were half chances more than anything. The pitch was wide and long which made it tiring getting up and down. We started the second half a lot brighter and we put ourselves about a lot more, attacking from the off. The first goal came as a result of a short corner which was then whipped into the 6 yard box and our striker (smallest player on the pitch) popped up with a direct header past the goalkeeper in the 40th minute. The next goal, which was crucial, came 3 minutes later after a corner was cleared and Kent countered at a fast pace. Although we lost the ball, we pressed early and retained possession. The ball fell nicely to our central midfielder, who struck the ball with her right foot into the top corner from 30 yards away. The keeper could only get her finger tips to it. After that, the game was limited to a few chances and we held on to win the National Cup. This is one of my best career wins so far and I will never forget lifting that trophy at the football ground in front of my friends and family, as well as live on TV."
